Main playable characters
Cloud Strife (クラウド・ストライフ, Kuraudo Sutoraifu?): The game's primary protagonist and a new member of AVALANCHE at the beginning of the game. A self-proclaimed ex-SOLDIER-turned mercenary employed by AVALANCHE. Cloud is portrayed as a confused and conflicted individual with an occasionally arrogant attitude and a cool disposition. That is, until a potentially traumatic experience helped him to discover his true self, and become more mentally relaxed. He wears a purple SOLDIER uniform and is distinguished by his glowing blue eyes, which are a sign of having been exposed to a large amount of mako. He also sports spiked blond hair, a trait that is meant to clearly separate him from the game's primary antagonist, Sephiroth. He wields a giant Buster Sword in combat. Beginning as a cold-hearted mercenary who refuses to aid AVALANCHE for any reason except money, Cloud eventually comes to take up the cause of the planet whole-heartedly, largely as a result of Sephiroth's influence. Before the events of Final Fantasy VII he was a private in the Shinra Army and best friends with Zack, a First Class Member of SOLDIER.
Barret Wallace (バレット・ウォーレス, Baretto Wōresu?): The original leader of AVALANCHE, Barret is a man with a powerful build and a deep-seated hatred of everything Shinra. Barret mistrusts Cloud at first because of the mercenary's past affiliation with the corporation, but eventually comes to respect and trust him. He lost his right forearm during an encounter with Shinra (that also destroyed his hometown) and had it replaced with a powerful gun prosthetic in order to take revenge. He is also very fond and sympathetic of nature and the planet, and it is because he believes Shinra is killing the planet that he brings AVALANCHE together. His drive to save the planet is only surpassed by the love for his adopted daughter Marlene.
Tifa Lockhart (ティファ・ロックハート, Tifa Rokkuhāto?) (originally romanized as Tifa Lockheart): A childhood friend of Cloud and a skilled martial artist in her own right. As one of the lead members of AVALANCHE, it is Tifa who convinced Cloud to work for the group. She has had strong feelings for him since childhood but won't admit it and thus displays caring emotions towards him. She has long brown hair tied back in a loose pony-tail and brown eyes. Tifa is the only one able to help Cloud unravel the secrets of his past during the course of the game.
Aerith Gainsborough (エアリス・ゲインズブール, Earisu Geinzubūru?) (romanized as Aeris Gainsborough in the original Final Fantasy VII game but retconned as Aerith in subsequent publications): A young woman who sells flowers on the streets of Midgar and is sought after by Shinra's research department. She asks Cloud to be her bodyguard after a run-in with the Turks, and subsequently joins AVALANCHE. Aerith has long brown hair she keeps in a braid with pink bows and vivid green eyes, and wears a red mini-jacket with a pink dress. Aerith is the last Cetra and can communicate with the Planet itself. However, she was eventually killed by Sephiroth. Even after her death, she helped save the planet by summoning the Lifestream to destroy Meteor with the help of other souls.
Red XIII (レッドXIII, Reddo Sātīn?) (also known as Nanaki): Strong, fierce, and coated with fire-red fur, Red XIII is a large and powerful creature with a strong intellect and warm heart to match. His species is possessed of great longevity, which surprises the party when they learn that his 48 years only amounts to adolescence by his species' standards. Though his real name is Nanaki, he is given the name Red XIII by Hojo, and the name sticks when the party rescues him from Hojo's laboratory. Red XIII believed his father, Seto, was a coward who had fled in the face of battle until he discovered Seto's petrified body at the Cave of the Gi. Red XIII then learned that Seto sacrificed himself to protect Cosmo Canyon.
Cait Sith (ケット・シー, Ketto Shī?): Appearing as a stuffed, talking cat, Cait Sith is friendly, but often unreliable. He rides on the back of a stuffed moogle, which does all of the pair's fighting. Cait Sith is eventually revealed to be an animatronic robot that Reeve Tuesti, Shinra's Head of Urban Development, used to infiltrate AVALANCHE. However, over time, Reeve came to care for his new friends and their cause, and used Cait Sith as a way for him to help them, for instance by providing AVALANCHE with secret Shinra information. Cait Sith sacrifices himself at one point in the game to aid the group, but a second Cait Sith immediately shows up to replace him. "Cait Sith" is gaelic for "fairy cat", alluded to by the (often derided) Scottish dialect of Cait Sith in Advent Children.
Cid Highwind (シド・ハイウィンド, Shido Haiwindo?): A rather grouchy and foul-mouthed (but nonetheless warm-hearted) character, Cid is a pilot who dreams of travelling into space. He lives with Shera, an assistant who forced Cid to abort his past chance of launching his rocket into space, saving Cid's life by checking oxygen tanks she correctly feared were faulty during the lift-off sequence. Cid designed the airship Highwind and also owns the Tiny Bronco, a small plane which Cloud and the others use as a boat in the game after it is downed by Shinra.
Yuffie Kisaragi (ユフィ・キサラギ, Yufi Kisaragi?): The spunky young ninja of Wutai and Godo's daughter. A self-proclaimed "Materia Hunter", Yuffie is in fact a pickpocket and thief who joins the party hoping to steal their Materia, with the intention of restoring her country, Wutai, to its former glory. Although Yuffie is a skillful ninja, she has her weaknesses: namely, she is prone to sea and air sickness and shows signs of kleptomania. She has short black hair and brown eyes.
Vincent Valentine (ヴィンセント・ヴァレンタイン, Vinsento Varentain?): A dark, brooding, and sardonic young man whose heart has been numbed by a tragic love. Vincent is a former Turks gunman who was experimented on by Hojo approximately thirty years before the start of the game,[1] and consequently developed superhuman abilities and characteristics. Cloud and the others eventually discover him sleeping inside a coffin in the basement of the Shinra Mansion, where he joins them in their quest. Vincent also recently starred in his own game, Final Fantasy VII: Dirge of Cerberus for the Playstation 2. The game was released on August 15, 2006 in North America. The game reveals further events of the story, and more of Vincent's past.
Sephiroth (セフィロス, Sefirosu?): Sephiroth is known to be the most powerful member of SOLDIER ever, and rose to a prominent rank at an early age. After a traumatic incident in which he learned of what he assumed to be his true origins, he left SOLDIER and indeed civilization altogether with plans to become a god-like power by wounding the Planet with Meteor and absorbing the entirety of the Lifestream sent to heal the damage. He manipulates Cloud (and the party, by extension) over the course of the game, as well as killing Aerith.
Sephiroth is also a member of the party for a very short period, however he is totally controlled by the computer during combat and the player cannot change his equipment and materia. Sephiroth is also personified by his primary weapon the powerful Masamune sword which he uses to inflict large amounts of damage.
Sephiroth is destroyed by Cloud at the end of the game, however, he returns for a short time in the sequel Advent Children where he takes over the body of Kadaj only to be defeated by Cloud again. However he warns Cloud that he will "Never be a memory" indicating that he will return once more to challenge Cloud.
Zack Fair (ザックス・フェア, Zakkusu Fea?) is a non-player character from the game Final Fantasy VII, and the protagonist of its prequel, Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII. He appears only in flashback sequences, which portray him as almost identical to Cloud Strife (the game's main playable character) in physical appearance except for his black hair. When strung together, the sequences explain a great deal about Cloud's past and his connection to Sephiroth, the game's arch-villain. He also wielded the Buster Sword before Cloud.
Zack was born in the town of Gongaga, where he lived until he left to join Shinra's militant force SOLDIER. Years later, he went to Nibelheim to investigate the nearby Mako reactor which had been malfunctioning. However, during the investigation Sephiroth discovered the truth behind his origins and went on a rampage destroying the Nibelheim village. Zack eventually confronted Sephiroth in a duel only to be defeated easily. Following the battle both he and Cloud were used by Hojo as test specimens. However Zack managed to escape after four years and carried the incapacitated Cloud with him to freedom. While on the run Zack is shot to death by Shinra soldiers, while Cloud is left for dead just outside Midgar. Throughout most of the game, Cloud adopts Zack’s memories and character traits as his own.
Zack met Aerith five years before the game began, and was her first crush. It's possible that they may have been dating for as much as two years, however, the specifics of their relationship are still unknown.
Zack re-appears in Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children mostly in flashbacks but later as a part of the lifestream alongside Aerith.
